From Concept to Cause: Creating a Charity Jewellery Collection with THR5VE

At Thai Design, jewellery manufacturing is not only about craftsmanship and precious materials. It’s also about purposeful social impact. Every once in a while, a project emerges that reminds us of why jewellery matters; and the power it has to drive meaningful change. Our recent collaboration with THR5VE is one of those projects.

Together, we developed a bespoke pendant for communities facing extraordinary challenges. What began as an idea evolved into a tangible piece of jewellery that can now be used to actively raise funds and awareness. We wrote this article to tell the story behind the piece: The work that sparked the inspiration, the meaning embedded in its design, the manufacturing process that brought it to life and the purpose it will now serve.

Supporting Communities in Crisis

THR5VE is a social enterprise dedicated to long-term community development in rural areas affected by conflict. They work in Myanmar – our next-door neighbour here in Thailand.

Following the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been facing an ongoing civil war, which is responsible for severe economic disruption and humanitarian crises. These struggles are further compounded by natural disasters, such as the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar in March 2025. An estimated 3 million Burmese people are currently displaced, and many communities face challenges in accessing essential services like healthcare, education and emergency support.

Despite these difficulties, local leaders and grassroots organisations across Myanmar have demonstrated remarkable resilience and ingenuity, creating solutions with limited resources. Instead of replacing this leadership, THR5VE’s focus is on amplifying it - partnering with local community figureheads to support initiatives that improve quality of life whilst strengthening long-term stability. These projects include medical care, emergency relief, educational opportunities and programmes designed to empower women.

THR5VE’s holistic, integrated approach to community development is reflected directly in their name. The ‘5’ represents the five pillars that they believe form the foundation of sustainable community development:

1.     Local Leadership
2.     Sustainable Resources: Cultivating solutions that can continue without external funding
3.     Crisis Resilience: Building communities that can withstand and recover from disasters
4.     Access to Health Care: Supporting the foundation of strong communities
5.     Environmental Harmony: Ensuring that development respects natural resources

THR5VE’s goal is not simply to provide short-term aid but to nurture long-term partnerships and resilience, helping communities move from survival towards long-term thriving.

Jewellery as a Vehicle for Storytelling

Our Managing Director Kim has known THR5VE’s founders Mel and Kelly for a while now, but it wasn’t until recently – over a chat about our companies’ overlapping values – that a lightbulb illuminated above Mel’s head. In her mind’s eye, she saw a piece of jewellery that embodies THR5VE’s identity and values – a design that could be used to create tangible change by raising funds and awareness.

At Thai Design, we’re deeply mindful of our impact on the world. Here at our manufacturing facility in Northern Thailand, we’re committed to the use of Fairmined Gold, recycled silver derived from discarded X-ray films, locally sourced gemstones and Lean Manufacturing principles that minimise waste at every stage.

However, our responsibility for people and planet doesn’t stop at the jewellery we create and how we make it. We’re also passionate about cultivating partnerships that proactively serve communities. Just like our recent collaboration with Biochar Life, this project was not simply about manufacturing a product, but using jewellery as a powerful storytelling medium – translating a mission into a wearable symbol.

Designing the Pendant

The final design is an organic circular sterling silver pendant, plated in 18ct gold and worn on a gold chain as a necklace.

On the front of the pendant is a raised ‘5,’ a direct extraction from THR5VE’s logo. Simple yet striking, it’s a recognisable emblem and a conversation starter.

The pendant’s reverse side features a Tree of Life motif. Across cultures and throughout history, this familiar symbol often represents interconnectedness, growth and resilience. For THR5VE, it’s a fitting reflection of the communities they support - rooted in local knowledge, growing through collaboration and strengthened by shared resources.

The Development & Production Processes

THR5VE’s bespoke design was nurtured through a collaborative development journey. Just like all of our jewellery manufacturing projects, THR5VE liaised directly with a dedicated Thai Design Account Manager, and channels of communication remained open throughout all stages of development and production.

The first stage of production involved creating a CAD (Computer-Aided Design). This digital design allowed us to refine proportions, thickness and structural details before moving into physical production.

Once the CAD was approved by THR5VE, we produced a resin prototype using high-precision 3D printing. Holding the design as a physical object allows us to evaluate scale, balance and visual impact to an extent that digital renders alone cannot provide.

After final adjustments, we progressed to the casting phase. First, a wax mould was created to cast the pendant in silver, forming what’s known as the silver master. The master acts as the benchmark for the entire collection, setting the standard for detail, form and finish.

To achieve the pendant’s organic texture, the silver master was carefully hand-engraved by a skilled artisan. This human touch introduced subtle depth that lent the design a natural, tactile character.

Finally, the pendant was plated in 18ct yellow gold, for a striking warmth and richness.

We’re delighted to share that THR5VE loved the final result - so much so that they proceeded with a full production order. Carefully checked by our Quality Control department and boxed up in bespoke packaging, the collection is now ready for THR5VE to share with their community as charity merchandise. Kim was delighted to hand the pieces over to Mel personally just a few weeks ago.

"It was a joy and delight to work with Thai Design. They answered all of my questions, were seamless to work with, and were incredibly helpful. I had never designed jewellery before and was nervous that it would make the process difficult, but their attention to detail and excellent customer service soothed all my concerns. 100% recommend working with them!"

Jewellery That Creates Impact

For us, projects like this one highlight the role of jewellery beyond aesthetics.

For millennia, jewellery has carried meaning and told stories – it has symbolised status, identity, love and belief systems across cultures and generations. Now, it can even serve as an active catalyst for change. A thoughtfully designed pendant has the power to spark conversations, connect people to a cause, and create a retail opportunity that directs funds in a purposeful direction.

As a jewellery manufacturing partner, the challenge for us lies in truly understanding our partner’s vision – then drawing on our specialist experience and technical knowledge to honour it accurately. The process of developing and producing THR5VE’s unique design was a rewarding journey of collaboration. It brings us immense satisfaction to wave off a creation that THR5VE feel proud of – a lovingly-crafted instrument to aid them in their mission.
