Lockets are perhaps the most recognisable form of keepsake jewellery. Originating from ancient religious amulets, they evolved throughout the Renaissance period to become intimate, portable containers for miniature portraits, handwritten notes, locks of hair or perfume-soaked fabric. Often kept secret throughout the Georgian and Victorian epochs, they were worn by all genders to signify devotion, loyalty and loss.
Like all jewellery, the locket has of course evolved in outward appearance across design eras – from ornate hand-engraved Victorian styles to the more contemporary minimal forms of today – but their emotional purpose has remained unchanged. From hand-painted faces to photographs, they have always existed as a wearable form of connection.
What many don’t know is that the craft of locket-making itself is both rare and highly specialised. It requires precise hinge construction, secure closures, perfect alignment, and carefully engineered interiors. Every element must function whilst remaining visually refined. Today, very few manufacturers continue to produce lockets in-house due to the technical complexity involved.

Urn Jewellery: A Personal Form of Remembrance
Urn jewellery represents another deeply meaningful, yet often lesser-known category of memorial jewellery.
Unlike traditional urns, which are typically large and stationary, urn jewellery offers a more personal and portable way to hold a loved one close. These pieces are designed with discreet internal chambers, secured by threaded screws or sealed closures, allowing wearers to carry ashes or other symbolic matter.
Much like lockets, the design and craftsmanship of urn jewellery requires an exceptional level of precision and sensitivity; secure enough to guarantee protection of what they contain, whilst remaining comfortable and wearable in everyday life. What’s more, the appearance of urn jewellery is often intentionally minimal - protecting privacy and allowing the wearer to carry their memory quietly, without outward display.
Personalisation Through Empty Recessed Settings
In addition to lockets and urn jewellery, we’ve observed a growing interest in pieces that allow for personalisation over time. One such approach is jewellery with empty recessed settings - intentionally designed spaces that enable the wearer or brand to complete the piece in their own way.
These recessed areas are often prepared to receive materials at a later stage, such as personal inlay stones, resin encapsulation or ashes. For some, this process may be a quiet, personal act carried out at home. For others, it may involve collaboration with a local jeweller or artist.
Designing for this kind of flexibility requires careful consideration. Much like urn jewellery, the depth, proportion, edge finishing and long-term wearability must all be precisely calibrated for structural integrity alongside a sense of refinement and discretion. In these ways, jewellery with recessed settings becomes not just a finished object, but an evolving entity shaped over time by the experiences and choices of the wearer.
Materials as Emotional Language
Material selection plays a crucial role in memorial and keepsake jewellery. Precious metals such as sterling silver and gold are often chosen not only for their durability but their symbolism; a sense of permanence and aging gracefully.
Likewise, diamonds and other precious gemstones like sapphires and rubies are deeply symbolic because they bridge personal history with timeless, enduring and universally understood meanings. For centuries these ‘cardinal gemstones’ have been chosen to mark life’s milestones – engagements, births, anniversaries – and been passed down as heirlooms, acting as “quiet guardians of memory” and tangible links between generations.
